DHT – Dihydrotestosterone is a powerful metabolite, of the hormone testosterone. DHT is 3 times more potent than testosterone. Unfortunately DHT is best known for its role in causing male pattern baldness and prostate problems and has also been identified in the development in some forms of acne.
DHT is not a contributing factor, female pattern baldness, which is characterized by the increased production of testosterone.
Many trials have been carried out to ascertain if certain environmental conditions may have an effect on the DHT levels. One such trial in the USA observed army recruits who suffered sleep deprivation. The trials concluded that stress, due to sleep deprivation, in fit males, was unlikely to elevate DHT.
It is generally accepted that baldness is genetic and if a person has a balding father they have a greater chance of experiencing the same pattern baldness.
As a rule it is more realistic to maintain the current hair than to try and replace or re grow hair that is lost and new cosmetic treatments are available to assist in this goal.
